Energy from diamonds? Yes, it's possible

Today, there are over 9000 energy producers in the U.S. sending electricity over 6 million miles of transmission lines according to a Wall Street Journal report on the future of energy. In the very near future, the Journal speculates, all the cars are electric and the computer power to drive all our AI-enabled devices increase the demand for electricity manifold. And, where will all that electricity come from? From you and me, apparently.

Are you ready for your home to become an energy producer?

Many homes have already become energy producers, of course. If you have solar panels on your roof, any excess energy you produce is sent into the grid to contribute carbon-free electricity to your community. In the WSJ’s vision of the future, this concept will be expanded with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). The AI will evaluate the demand from all the appliances and electronics in your home and predict demand across an increasingly complex grid.

Whether we can produce enough energy from carbon-free sources is still up in the air. There are many promising technologies from today’s most efficient – solar – to such fanciful concepts as burning biomass or next generation fusion. In my new book, I’ve predicted that we will find an endless supply of clean energy by storing Carbon-14 in diamonds. Scientists at England’s Bristol University have already demonstrated the capability.

The physics are pretty complicated. Nevertheless, it boils down to three straightforward factors: (1) radioactive Carbon-14 can be extracted from nuclear waste, leaving a harmless mass behind; (2) diamonds are great at absorbing and evenly distributing heat; and, (3) heat can be converted into the production of electricity.

When placed in the proximity of a radioactive source – like Carbon-14 – the diamonds produce energy. Bristol U’s professor Tom Scott says, “There are no moving parts involved, no emissions generated, and no maintenance required, just direct electricity generation. By encapsulating radioactive material inside diamonds, we turn a long-term problem of nuclear waste into a nuclear-powered batter and a long-term supply of clean energy.”

In my new book, the battle to control the intellectual property of this breakthrough technology plays a central role. It could be the solution to not only climate change but also the elimination of radioactive nuclear waste.

Wouldn’t that be lovely?
